2021 Intentions

“We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives…not looking for flaws, but for potential.”

– Ellen Goodman

This morning on January 1st 2021, I opened my eyes and first observed the sunlight spilling into my bedroom. I wriggled my toes and fingers and stretched a little. I deliberately took a few deep breaths before transitioning out of bed.

I mentally scanned the past year of 2020 – the challenging times mixed in with the beautiful moments. I wandered downstairs and poured myself a cup of coffee. Then I wrote this out on a piece of paper:

In 2021,
May you…

Have the Confidence to follow your heart,

The Calmness to breathe through challenges,

The Creativity to sculpt and compose each day,

The Clarity to discern what matters most,

The Curiosity to explore and play,

The Courage to follow your internal compass,

The Compassion that includes both  yourself and others,

and the Connectedness to know your true belonging in this world.

This writing originated from deep in my heart. The 8 C’s (Confidence, Calmness, Creativity, Clarity, Curiosity, Courage, Compassion, and Connectedness) are a central component in Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy. IFS therapy is something I have benefited greatly from and I encourage you to read more about it by following the link above.

The 8 qualities are aspects of our core self. Any one of the 8 C’s would be a powerful intention to explore for this coming year. Or, choose one each day to focus on. All of these roads lead back home…back to yourself.

Thank you for accompanying me on this journey at Art Therapy Spot. I can’t wait to see where it takes us next!
